Prvý krok
The first step
Naše hlavné mesto má veľa otvorených otázok na známe či menej známe problémy vo sfére architektúry a ním súvisiaceho verejného priestoru. Odpovede na ne hľadajú rôzne skupiny ľudí – investori, ktorí často obhajujú len svoje vlastné záujmy (česť výnimkám), rôzni aktivisti a väčšina architektov, ktorí sa snažia obhajovať záujem verejný. Samospráva či štát so svojimi inštitúciami by taktiež mali byť na prvom mieste v hľadaní čo najlepších riešení k všeobecnej spokojnosti, mali by byť príkladom. No nie vždy je to mu tak. Zmenou majiteľa areálu Hurbanovych kasární tu je šanca, nielen na zmenu funkčnej náplne s väzbou na okolie ale aj na zmenu spôsobu riešenia – prístupu k danej problematike. Aby z problematiky nebol problém... Prvý krok pre Bratislavu spravili mladí študenti architektúry z Európy a Slovenska. S ich vizionárskymi počinmi sa môžete oboznámiť v tomto bulletine. Our capital holds many unanswered questions to more or lesser known architectural issues and its public spaces. The answers to these problems are attempted by different groups of people – investors, who only care for their own interests and - activists, many of whom are architects, whose aim is to represent public interest. The local and the state governments along with their various institutions should be on the forefront in finding the best solutions for their citizens; they should lead by example. Sadly, this is not always the case. The change in ownership of the Hurban barracks brings with it an opportunity to bring about a change in function, where harmony with its surrounding environment and an alteration in the conceptual approach to the solution can become the prime focus. So that the issue does not become a problem… The first step for Bratislava was made by young students of architecture from Europe and Slovakia. Their visionary solutions for the issue at hand can be found in this bulletin.

Mladí architekti bez zaťaženia a s nadhľadom riešili nielen funkčnú náplň objektov kasární ale pochopili, že téma je oveľa širšia. Nemotivoval ich len samotný areál, zaoberali sa aj jeho zapojením do centra mesta, jeho štruktúry ako aj transformáciou jeho uzavretej tváre a potrebou otvoriť ho ľuďom. Zahraniční študenti za desať dní pochopili ako Bratislava funguje, spoznali ju... Zistili čo jej chýba a ponúkli spolu so slovenskými kolegami atraktívne návrhy - idey riešenia kasární i návrhy lepšieho prepojenia jednotlivých kultivovaných verejných priestorov mesta. Všetky návrhy spája jeden cieľ, vytvoriť unikátne fungujúce miesto, kultúrny areál, ktoré ponúkne Bratislavčanom a turistom atraktívne prostredie. The participating young architects, grasping the full extent of the topic at hand, went about finding a new use for the barracks with imagination and determination. Their motivation was not only the building itself but also its connection to the city center close by, where they attempted to change its closed composition and make it accessible for the public. The students from abroad had ten days to learn how Bratislava “works” and to get to know it… Enough to know what it lacks, which allowed them, along with their Slovak colleagues, to provide attractive and novel proposals and new ideas on how to connect the barracks with the surrounding public spaces. All proposals had one goal in mind; to create a place of function, a center of culture, which would offer the inhabitants of Bratislava and its tourists an attractive new environment.

Výstupy z workshopu sú veľmi inšpirujúce. Nešťastným riešením by bolo nekoncepčné nasťahovanie inštitúcií, ktoré spadajú pod kultúru do týchto priestorov len tak. Je nutné si uvedomiť, že je to šanca nielen pre kultúrnu obec ale i Bratislavu. Správna adaptácia môže potiahnuť smerom nahor aj ďalšie časti mesta, presne tak ako na to upozorňujú vo svojich prácach študenti. Je potrebné, aby vznikla odborno-laická diskusia s MK SR, mestom Bratislava, kultúrnou obcou, architektmi a občanmi na formulovanie požiadaviek pri vytváraní lokalitného programu. Z týchto požiadaviek by sa mali sformulovať podmienky na serióznu medzinárodnú urbanisticko - architektonickú súťaž, čo bolo a je jedným z cieľov podujatia. Organizátori podujatia BiS 2011 The results of the workshop are very inspiring indeed. They show that it would be a very unimaginative solution just to move several institutions of the Ministry of Culture to fill these spaces. What needs to be understood is that the current situation represents a chance for revitalization, not only for the cultural community but for the whole capital. As the students have suggested, a complex solution for the issue at hand could uplift not only the center of Bratislava but also other city blocks in its vicinity. Therefore, a necessity for a discussion formulating the requirements for creating a local revitalization program between the Ministry of Culture, the city magistrate, the cultural and the architectural community and the general public appears to exist. From these requirements a set of conditions for an international architectural and urbanistic competition should be derived. This was one of the main goals of this workshop. Podujatie bolo otvorené pódiovou diskusiou o Hurbanovych kasárňach za účasti Petra Gera, Ingrid Konrád, Štefana Holčíka, Andrei Bacovej, Jána Bahnu a Janky Motyčkovej. Diskusia ponúkla pre účastníkov wokrshopu a ďalších hostí zaujímavé informácie o objekte, jeho histórii a nadväzujúcom okolí. The opening event of the workshop was a panel discussion about the Hurban barracks, where the main speakers included Peter Gero, Ingrid Konrád, Štefan Holička, Andea Bacová, Ján Bahna and Janka Motyčková. This discussion provided its participants with interesting information about the location and history of the building and its surroundings.
Večer pokračoval svojou prezentáciou Peter Gero na tému „Megapolis alebo nová orientácia k živému mestu?“. V nej poukázal aj na ambície Bratislavy, vymedzením viacerých neuralgických bodov, ktoré vytvoria zásadný rámec orientácie rozvoja centra mesta v priebehu budúcich 10 až 15 rokoch. Medzi ne patrí práve aj Kollárovo námestie s areálom bývalých Hurbanovych kasární. Kapela Petra Lipu rozprúdila neformálnu časť večera s otvorením výstavy priemyselných dizajnérov zo Slovenska a Čiech. The evening progressed with the presentation “Megapolis or a new way towards a live city?” by Peter Gero. The presentation dealt with the ambitions of Bratislava and identified several neuralgic areas that will form the framework for the future development of the city center within the next 10 to 15 years. Kollárovo square, where the Hurban barracks are located is one of these areas. The band of Peter Lipa initiated the informal part of the evening, which included an exhibition of the work of industrial designers from Slovakia and the Czech republic.
PETER GERO _ Bratislava 1942 _SVŠT, Stavebná fakulta, Bratislava; Institut fȕr Städtebau, Urbanizmus, Berlin Dlhé roky pracoval pre Hamburský magistrát, v rokoch 1994 a 2006 viedol stavebný rozvoj mesta Hamburg. Stál pri vzniku novej modernej mestskej časti „Hafen city“, na ktorej spolupracoval s významnými svetovými architektmi. V súčasnosti sa angažuje v rozvoji mesta Bratislavy. _SVŠT, Fakulty of Civil Engineering, Bratislava; Institut fȕr Städtebau, Urbanizmus, Berlin Worked for years for the Magistrate of the city of Hamburg and was the head of urban development for the city from 1994 to 2006. Along with other world class architects he was at the conception of “Hafen city”, a new, modern district in Hamburg. He is currently aiding in the development of the city of Bratislava.

Príjemný večer pokračoval hudobnou produkciou kapely “Papa trio” pri vynikajúcom vínku. Young architects from Bratislava, who have guided the students during the worksho presented their own projects and real-world experience.The pleasurable evening continued with excellent wine and music from the band “Papa trio”.

ĽUBO ZÁVODNÝ_ Nitra, 1959 _SVŠT, Fakulta architektúry, Bratislava Má bohatú prax z projektových ústavov a architektonických kancelárií. V roku 1995 založil vlastnú kanceláriu ZÁVODNÝ AA v Bratislave. Je autorom a spoluautorom známych stavieb: Centrála VÚB banky, dom nábytku „Átrium“ a mnohých iných. _SVŠT, Faculty of Architecture, Bratislava Has substantial experience from several design institutions and architectural bureaus. He founded his own architectural bureau ZÁVODNÝ AA in Bratislava in 1995 and is the author and co-author of several known buildings such as VÚB Bank, “Átrium” and others.

Výstava prebiehala v priestoroch Hurbanovych kasární počas celého trvania podujatia. Exponáty vyrobené v mierke 1:1 z novodobých materiálov slúžili aj ako mobiliár pre účastníkov BiS 2011. Hostia tak mali možnosť modely vyskúšať. Za zorganizovanie výstavy patrí veľká vďaka Zdenke Poliakovej, architektovi Tomášovi Valentovi a ich šikovnému tímu. The exhibition took place inside the Hurban barracks themselves and lasted throughout the entire workshop. The exhibits in 1:1 scale made of various new materials also served as furniture for the participants of BiS 2011, thereby giving them a chance to try out these models first hand. Our thanks for this exhibition go to Zdenka Poliaková and the architect Tomáš Valenta as well as their skilled team.

Tím architektov formou voľnej diskusie viedol priebeh tvorby ôsmych skupín študentov. Tí pracovali priamo na mieste činu a zažili tak priestor na vlastnej koži. Zmes entuziazmu, odvahy, zdravej naivity a skúsených architektov viedla k výsledným návrhom. The creative process within the eight student groups was lead by a team of architects via a free discussion. All of this took place on the scene inside the barracks, so that the participants could experience the space first hand. This, plus a combination of enthusiasm, boldness, a measure of naivety and guidance by the experienced team of architects led to the final concepts.

Zámerom bolo rozdeliť kultúrny a spoločenský život do rôznych výšok a vytvoriť tak funkčné zóny nad pôvodnou výškou terénu - priviesť teda život aj do výšky, avšak takým spôsobom, aby sa výstup spojil s rekreáciou. Všetko zabalené do veľmi ekologicky riešenej formy inšpirovanej prírodou, poskytuje človeku možnosť ísť sa hneď po večeri prejsť mestskou lúkou a oddýchnuť si. We wanted to divide the areas for cultural and social life into various levels and zones above ground level. As an answer to the lack of green spots with trees and facilities for leisure time, we have created an idea of something as a meadow in the centre of the city. By using modern construction and technology and by including functions like exhibitions, workshops or restaurants would be coated with form, green as the nature is, so after the dinner, one can find some rest walking among our ‘city meadow’.

Vojenské budovy sú vyhynutý druh. To je dôvod, prečo sme sa rozhodli spraviť zo zvyškov budovy fosíliu. Jednoducho ju pokrývame betónom, zatvárame okná aj dvere, aby to, čo zostalo z budovy pôsobilo ešte viac uzavreto a pripomínalo, čo tu existovalo predtým. Military buildings are extinct. This is why the remains of the building should be made into a memento of the old barracks, yet, it should be nothing like it. So we simply cover it up in concrete and close all windows and doors to make what is left of the original building seem even more closed. In this way, it will provide perfect exhibition halls for the public and will serve as a fossil of an extinct building.

Zuzana Hutárová SK Marco Bencivenga IT Miriam Ballesteros E Saba Zahedi Asl NL Perforácia ako hlavná myšlienka nášho návrhu je použitá troma spôsobmi: otvorením samotného miesta voči okolitému životu, odprezentovaním budovy a sprístupnením nádvoria pre ľudí. Týmto otvorením sme chceli zvýrazniť cestu od Grassakovichovho paláca až k Dunaju, Eurovei a Novému divadlu. Na tejto ceste a v jej okolí sa nachádza veľa kultúrnych aktivít. Preto sa účasťou na nej naša budova stane významným domovom plným možností a kultúrneho vyžitia pre všetkých. Perforation is the main idea of our design and it is used in three ways –in the way of opening the area, presenting the building and making the courtyard interesting for many people. By perforating the barracks we wanted to open and enhance the route starting in front of Gassalkovich Palace leading to the river Danube, Eurovea and the New Theatre. This route join many cultural activities that exist in the neighborhood. By joining this cultural route our building will become an important center full of cultural activities open to everyone.

Bartlomiej Poteralski PL Ema Zafirova MK Michala Bašová SK Sascha Paweltschik D MEDZI ZÁPADOM A VÝCHODOM SLNKA PRÍBEH LÁSKY V BRATISLAVE Po prvýkrát navštívil Bratislavu, hlavné mesto “DUNAJ EURÓPY”. Douglas mal 9 rokov, keď sa prvýkrát potápal. Teraz hľadal nové vzrušenie. Počas jeho výletu cez Európu sa Douglas rozhodol potápať v bunkroch “BRATISLAVSKYCH KASÁRNÍ”. Bolo to po prvýkrát, čo cestoval sám, po rozchode s jeho dievčaťom. Douglas sa cítil opustený. Prechádzal sa popri Dunaji, “PRÚDE ŽIVOTA”. Zbadal pár budov plávajúcich na vode s vlajkami na vrchu. Douglas rozoznal nemeckú, ale bolo ich tam viac. Neskôr, keď sa dostal k “Nemeckej ambasáde”, počul hudbu, ktorú počul kedysi v Mníchove na Oktoberfeste. Vo dverách si vypýtali jeho pas. Douglas im ho ukázal. Chlapík sa len zasmial a ukázal smerom na turistické informácie. Tam si Douglas kúpil “CESTOVNÝ PAS DUNAJ EURÓPY”. Teraz mohol navštíviť zvyšné “ambasády”, dostať pečiatky a skúsiť ich národné jedlo a pitie. Douglas tak spravil. V jeden deň navštívil nielen Bratislavu, ale skoro všetky krajiny ”DUNAJ EURÓPY”. Douglas sa cítil opustený a opitý. V tú chvíľu zbadal, neďaleko od Národného divadla, tisíce žiariacich papierových lodí, prichádzajúcich niekde zo severu mesta, cestou až do Dunaja. Taktiež zbadal krásne osamelé dievča, hľadajúce niečo na zemi. Stratila náramok a Douglas pomáhal s hľadaním. Nakoniec sa rozhodli nájsť spolu miesto odkiaľ vychádzajú papierové loďky a zabočili na Lazaretskú ulicu “PRÚD LÁSKY”. Všetko bolo osvetlené, hudba k nim doliehala z malých barov a reštaurácií. Pár opitých Ukrajincov spievalo folklór. Liza a Douglas dorazili do “BRATISLAVSKYCH KASÁRNÍ”, na miesto kde “PRÚD LÁSKY” začína. Obaja si kúpili papierovú loďku a vpísali do nej meno osoby, do ktorej by sa chceli zaľúbiť. Dievča, ktoré predávalo loďky, povedalo, že ich prianie sa splní, ak loďky doplávajú až do Čierneho mora. Asi nemusím spomínať, že “Douglas” bolo napísané na Lizinej loďke a Douglas napísal “Liz” na tú svoju. Liz a Douglas strávili noc veslovaním a bozkávaním v jaskyniach Hurbanovych kasární. Douglas sa už necítil osamelý. Zamiloval sa do Liz, v jednu letnú noc v nádhernom meste Bratislava, hlavnom meste “Dunaj Európy”.
BETWEEN SUNSET AND SUNRISE THE BRATISLAVA LOVE STORY It was his first time in Bratislava, the capital of “DANUBE OF EUROPE”. Douglas was nine as he was diving for the first time. Now he was looking for a new thrill. During his trip through Europe Douglas decided to dive in the bunker of “BRATISLAVA BARRACKS” It was his first time travelling alone after the separation with his girlfriend. Douglas felt lonely. He was walking along the Danube, “THE STREAM OF LIFE”. He saw some buildings floating on the water, with some flags the top. Douglas could recognize the German one, but there were more down the river. After getting closer to the “German Embassy”, he heard music, he already heard once in Munich on the Oktoberfest. At the door he was asked for his passport. Douglas showed it. The guy smiled and pointed at the tourist information. There Douglas bought a “DANUBE OF EUROPE PASSPORT”. Now he was able to visit all the “embassies”, get a stamp for the visit, and try the national food and drinks. Douglas did this. In one day he visited not only Bratislava but almost all the countries of ”DANUBE OF EUROPE”. Douglas felt lonely and drunk. At this moment, next to the National Theater he saw thousands of glowing paper boats coming somewhere from the north of the city all the way down to the Danube. And he saw a beautiful lonely girl searching for something on the ground. She was missing her bracelet and Douglas helped searching. At the end they decided to look together for the point where the paper boats were comming from and turned to the Lazaretska Street “THE STREAM OF LOVE”. Everything was illuminated; music came from the small bars and restaurants. Some drunken Ukrainians were singing their folksongs Liza and Douglas arrived at “BRATISLAVA BARRACKS”, the place where the “STREAM OF LOVE” begins. Each of them bought a paper boat and wrote on it the name of the person, they would like to be in love with. The girl who sold the boats told them that the wish will come true when the boats arrive at the Black Sea. I don’t have to mention that “Douglas” was written on Liza’s boat and Douglas wrote “Liza” on his. Liza and Douglas spent the night rowing and kissing in the caves of “BRATISLAVA BARRACKS”. Douglas didn’t feel lonely anymore. He was in love with Liza, this summer night in the wonderful city of Bratislava, the capital of “DANUBE OF EUROPE”.

Práve srdce tvorí kontrast k pôvodným budovám. Početné biologické funkcie srdca transformujeme do architektonického ponímania: srdce sa nachádza v centre dvora, oživuje priestor, spája navzájom rôzne časti budov, necháva ľudí (energiu) prúdiť cez seba, je križovatkou a podáva informácie. Hlavnou funkciou srdca je komunikácia medzi všetkými budovami. Vo vnútri sa nachádza vertikálne komunikačné jadro a „žily“ srdca dopravujú ľudí. Tiež rozdeľuje dvor, čím vytvára priateľský priestor. Jedna zo „žíl“ srdca, vykonzolovaná smerom do Kollárovho námestia, funkčne slúžiaca k poskytnutiu výhľadu, má byť znakom, symbolom. Projekt Srdce je jednoduchý, založený na silnej myšlienke. Odráža potreby Bratislavy na kvalitný verejný priestor, ktorý bude neustále aktívny vďaka jeho obyvateľom.
The heart concept keeps the old buildings, fils in the gaps with structures and puts a heart inside all of it. It follows a lot of biological heart features in an architectural way: it is in the very centre of courtyard, gives life to space, connect parts of the building, lets people (energy) spread all over it, is a crossroad and provides information. The Heart’s main function is to provide communication among all the buildings. Inside there will be vertical communication core, and “veins” will allow people to get to the barracks. It will also divide the courtyard and create friendly space. The Heart project is very simple and is based on a strong idea. It reflects the needs of Bratislava for good public space which will be active the entire time thanks to the city’s citizens.

Zazeleniť vnútorný priestor, otvoriť ho ľuďom a jednoducho ho urobiť živým. Projekt môže byť realizovaný v niekoľkých fázach. Proces môže začať malými zmenami a skončiť kompletným redizajnom. Navrhujeme zvýšiť potenciál miesta. Hlavná idea je priniesť do nádvoria atmosféru korza a prepojiť s ním dôležité časti mesta. Chceme prilákať obyvateľov aby tu trávili svoj voľný čas. Preto navrhujeme otvoriť blokovú štruktúru okoliu. Na nádvorí by sme radi vytvorili príjemnú atmosféru plnú zelene. Umelé stromy vytvoria vizuálnu identitu, ponúknu funkcie (disco, galéria, kaviareň,...) a prepoja rôzne časti okolitých budov. Our design focuses on the transformation process as a design, that would be real. We suggest letting the inside space go green, open it to the people and simply make the space live. The project can be realized in few steps. It may start with little change and end with a complete redesign of the place. Our proposal is to raise the potential of this area. The main idea is to bring the atmosphere of “korzo” to the inside of the courtyard and connect it with the most significant points of the city. We want to attract the citizens to spend their spare time here. That is why we have designed a block structure open to its surroundings. The courtyard should have an enjoyable atmosphere and be fully green, as mentioned before. Artificiall trees will create a visual identity, offer functions such as a disco, bar, coffee, etc. and connect the various parts of the surrounding buildings.

Idea “uzla” spája zeleň a kultúru. Vytvára spojenie Medickej záhrady s Kollárovym námestím, čím sa stáva súčasťou systému spájajúceho zelené plochy mesta Bratislavy. Na ňom ľudia na prechádzkach medzi jednotlivými parkami a námestiami (zažívajúc meniace sa atmosféry) objavia nový priestor s atraktívnym kultúrnym obsahom, priestor v ktorom sa spája relax s kultúrou. Uzol je ideový koncept vytvorenia novej sviežej architektúry, ktorá upúta pozornosť okoloidúcich. Predstavuje líniu, ktorá prevedie návštevníkov objektom kasárni, na ktorej zažijú rôzne kultúrne aktivity. Samotné nádvorie sa ako flexibilný priestor stane dejiskom rôznorodých spoločenských podujatí, koncertov, letného kina, vianočných trhov... Spolu s podporou kultúrnych funkcií „uzla” a prízemia s mestskými funkciami sa zo starých kasárni stane priestor pulzujúci životom plným kultúry, zábavy a relaxu. The idea of “a green knot” tights together greenery and culture. Connecting the medical garden with Kollar square the KNOT will became a part of a system connecting green areas of the city of Bratislava. People, during their walks, will find new atmosphere attracting them to just stay and relax with culture. It’s fresh new architecture will attract people to experience the newly created cultural atmosphere. Supported by the KNOT with its cultural functions and ground floor with its city functions, the barracks have good potential of become a lively cultural space.

Treba sa jej chytiť skôr ako bude neskoro! Alebo... môžete čakať a urobiť to ako my - tým najlepším spôsobom. Keďže takéto rozhodnutia ako vyžadujú zložitý byrokratický postup, je pravdepodobné, že naši ministri budú o 10-30 rokov stále čakať, kým sa niečo urobí a dá sa predpokladať, že budovy medzičasom schátrajú. Poďme preto radšej vytvoriť už teraz niečo úžasné, čo vyhovuje súčasným potrebám. Originálny tvar ponecháme iba ako odtlačok, ako spomienku, ako symbol. Výsledok bude odkazovať k histórii a reflektovať súčasnosť v dokonalej harmónii. Pridáme ešte reorganizáciu priestorov v okolí a nová budova sa stane uzlovým bodom vo vnútornej sieti mesta. Naším cieľom je vytvoriť stretávací bod pre ľudí každého veku, multifunkčný komplex, ktorý zabezpečuje rozmanitosť funkcií, rôzne ciele, prístupy a dokáže udržať miesto “živé” vo dne a v noci. The unused complex of the former barracks present a great chance for Bratislava to gain an interesting cultural center. So catch this chance and do it as fast as possible, or wait and do it our way, the best way. Since making such a decision implies a huge bureaucratic process we consider that our ministers after 10 - 30 years will be still waiting to do something, and the buildings will be completely ruined by then. So we don’t need to keep them. Let’s make something awesome inside and keep the original shape just as a memory of the original place, a symbol. The result will link the history of the place to the contemporary needs in perfect harmony. Through this and through re-organization of the open public space around it, the building should work as a node within the urban network of the city. We can create a multifunctional complex which should ensure a diversity of functions, mix of targets, schedules, etc. and keep the place as lively as possible day and night.

Účastníci workshopu a ďalší študenti sa zúčastnili šestnástich kvalitných prednášok na fakultách STU Bratislava z oblasti urbanizmu, konverzie budov, zelenej architektúry, nových trendov v navrhovaní budov a digitálnej architektúry. Garantom akademickej časti bol prof. Dušan Petráš. The workshop participants and other students had a chance to attend sixteen highly sophisticated lectures focused on urbanism, building conversion, green architecture, new design trends and digital architecture at various faculties of the STU Bratislava. The patron of this academic part was prof. Dušan Petráš.

Bohaté akademické aktivity, prax a vedecká činnosť zaraďujú prof. Petráša medzi elitu v oblasti technických zariadení budov. _SVŠT, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Bratislava Lectures at the Faculty for Civil Engineering of the STU in Bratislava. He held the office of dean of this faculty and later served as a vice rector of the entire STU. His academic achievements, experience and scientific research make prof. Petráš one of the elite academicians in the field of technical equipment of buildings.
